The Whiteboard has Changed Presentations Forever
A whiteboard refers to a white, smooth surface on which one can make temporary markings using a specially designed non-permanent marker (commonly known as a whiteboard marker). White boards evolved as something that would be the best alternative to chalkboards. White boards began to gain popularity in the eighties and today the whiteboard finds its application in many places such as institutions, offices, meeting halls, places of education and other similar environments.
The whiteboard appeared just when the airborne particles from the chalks began to raise concerns in people's minds. It was in those times computers were beginning to be introduced into classrooms and the airborne particles from chalks posed the threat of greatly damaging the chips of the computer. Moreover, chalks also leave the surrounding air quality poor and they are often around children. Because of these distinct advantages, whiteboards have replaced chalkboards in lots of places.
White boards come in big variety for all different purproses based on the material of which they are made:
Melamine: this variety is used the most extensively mainly because they are so inexpensive. But this type of white board has disadvantages such as earl ghosting effect (the markings becoming permanent on board), staining, etc., in a very short time and thus, these are very poor quality.
Painted steel or aluminum: These types of whiteboards are made of steel or aluminum surfaces with white paint sprayed on them. This type is both long-lasting and easy to wipe clean. However, the board becomes stained due to the porous paint surface and is also prone to scratches.
Glass: Glass whiteboards are more advantageous as they can be used with both permanent and non-permanent ink and ghosting does not occur.
Hardcore laminates: Though this variety of whiteboards are prone to getting scratched, the boards don't retain stain because they do not retain marker-- neither dry erase or permanent.
Porcelain: The boards are constructed of a ceramic surface on steel. Depending on the type of porcelain, the board will have different erasability and scratch resistance.
The whiteboards have many benefits over chalkboards.
Although whiteboards have disadvantages, their advantages outshine all the downsides. Whiteboards are invariably employed in various places starting from small kitchens in homes to huge meeting halls of companies. They create the most comfortable viewing experience, with great visual presentation and no dust generated.
The maintenance of whiteboards is also easy. Use only standard dry-erase markers on the whiteboard. Because permanent markers look just like dry-erase markers, it's best to not leave them any where near a white board. Every time the board is used it should be erased. When using the board every day, clean it three times a week or more. The markings shouldn't be erased right away, as this can cause a ghosting effect. To clean, use glass cleaner or some other non-abrasive cleaner.
For whiteboards that aren't magnetic it's not necessary to clean before use, but magnetic ones need to be cleaned with glass cleaner before use. Use felt erasers and when the eraser becomes dirty, change it immediately so that it does not stain on the board. Magnetic whiteboards ought to be rinsed often with water. For stubborn stains, stain remover can be used.
Whiteboards with their many advantages have become the most prominent type of boards now. Their disadvantages are minimized when they are properly maintained with proper use.
