Big Day Ruined By Flammable Wedding Dress
Julie Turnbuck, 34 from Tiverton in Devon, England had the shock of her life last Saturday after her wedding dress caught fire and had to be removed at the altar to avoid burning her skin.
Julie had forked out over £20,000 on her dream wedding to Peter Huntington and had been planning it for over a year. She was hoping it would be a day neither would ever forget. She certainly got her wish as only minutes in the service at St Pauls Church her wedding dress was ignited by a nearby candle and quickly spread up her long train towards the body of the dress. Some helpers burnt their fingers when they attempted to rip the train from the main dress to halt the fire but were not successful.Quick-thinking Peter helped Julie struggle free from the flaming dress only seconds before it was completely ablaze. Guest hats where eventually used to put the flames out by bucketing water from the baptism bath.To prevent the church pews from catching on fire as well, a bystander cleverly poured water over these all well to keep them cool.
Julie had inherited her dress from her late grandmother, Martha Wintbury, who wore it on her wedding day back in 1931. The material was not safe at all as the dress has been designed and made before their were any fire-retardant standards in place for clothing. One fire officer who attended the scene said that the material must have been very flammable to go up so easily and he also suggested that anyone else who wears a handed down garment should check first to make sure it is fire-safe. Julie only received minor burns but the fire officer pointed out how lucky she was. “once you get stuck in a piece of clothing that is alight, it is very difficult to remove and deep burns usually occur”. Julie luckily had undergarments on that protected her modesty and she made it to the after wedding reception venue
Peter, a mechanic has also had his fair share of expericence with fire as by some bizarre coincidence his hair was set alight when working on car due to a high alcohol level in his styling gel. There were not flames for long but it still left him with some scares to show. The couple are planning to reschedule the wedding for this summer and are looking into castle weddings. They say it will be a flammables free day.
